Happy Thích Quảng Đức Buddha Entering Nirvana Day - Mừng Ngày Phật Thích Quảng Đức Nhập Niết Bàn!!!

This monument was inaugurated on September 18 2010 with the height of 6m and weighed 12 tons, located in Phan Đình Phùng - Lê Văn Duyệt Crossroads (where is now called Nguyễn Đình Chiểu - Cách Mạng Tháng Tám Crossroads) in Ward 6, District 3, Sài Gòn, Southern Vietnam. It commemorate Monk Thích Quảng Đức, a Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk who had self immolated in the Religion War on June 11 1963 (Leap April 20 in Lunar Calendar / 양력 1963년 6월 11일, 음력 윤4월 20일) to protest the religious bias on Christianity by President Ngô Đình Diệm's family and unfair actions to Buddhism in general and some Buddhist generals in Republic Of South Vietnam's military at the time.

 

 

Despite President Ngô Đình Diệm of Republic Of South Vietnam was a patriot and well educated person, he authorized for his family members who are Christians to holding many powers and did some unfair policies to Buddhism, limited the authorities of some Buddhist army generals and Buddhist festivals, caused dissatisfaction and struggle between Buddhists and the Christian biased people. This event led Monk Thích Quảng Đức to self immolated to against the policies. He also had written a letter to President Ngô Đình Diệm and ask him to check the problems, fix and stop the mistakes, without showing any hatred.

After his death, his body was re-cremated during the funeral, but Quảng Đức's heart remained intact and did not burn with the heat of 4,000 celsius degree. It was considered to be holy as the "Sarira of Vajra Heart" and placed in a glass chalice at Xá Lợi Pagoda. The intact heart relic is regarded as a symbol of compassion, courage and incredible power. Quảng Đức has subsequently been revered by Vietnamese Buddhists as a Bodhisattva and Vietnamese Buddhists called him as "Bodhisattva Thích Quảng Đức". Now, his "Eternal Heart Relic" is stored and worshipping in Việt Nam Quốc Tự Pagoda in District 10, Sài Gòn city.
